Nissui Achieves First Profit in Land-Based Shrimp Farming: A Step Toward Sustainable Aquaculture
(JAPAN, 11/21/2024)
Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (Nissui) (President: Shingo Hamada) held a farming business briefing in Tokyo on the 19th, announcing a breakthrough in achieving profitability in land-based shrimp farming for the first time
By developing proprietary cost-reduction technologies, Nissui expects to generate profits of several million yen from shrimp shipments in fiscal 2024. This progress marks a significant step as the company sharpens its aquaculture technologies across both land and sea operations, including offshore farming, to stay ahead in the intensifying global competition for marine resources.

Technological Advancements in Aquaculture
Mitsuru Taniuchi, Executive Officer and Deputy Head of Nissui's Fisheries Business Division, as well as Head of the Farming Business Promotion Department, explained the success. “The cumulative impact of numerous initiatives, such as precise water quality and flow management, has significantly reduced shrimp mortality rates. In the future, land-based aquaculture will play a pivotal role in ensuring a stable seafood supply,” Taniuchi stated.
Since 2023, Nissui’s shrimp farming operations have been managed by the Fisheries Business Division 2, with the Oita Marine Biological Technology Center of the Central Research Laboratory continuing to provide technical support.
Production Goals and Future Plans
Nissui produced 110 tons of whiteleg shrimp in FY2023 and plans to expand this to 140 tons by FY2027 within its existing facilities. Over the coming years, the company will reassess the business's feasibility and explore scaling up production further.

Innovations in Nissui’s Land-Based Shrimp Farming
Nissui’s land-based aquaculture system offers a sustainable and efficient approach to shrimp farming, with the following key features:
-
Biofloc-Based Recirculating Aquaculture System:
The system uses aggregates of microorganisms (biofloc) to maintain water quality in closed shrimp ponds with minimal water replacement. Biofloc coexists with the shrimp, nitrifying nitrogen from residual feed and excrement, thereby ensuring optimal water conditions.
-
Reduced Environmental Impact:
Compared to conventional shrimp farming, Nissui’s system drastically minimizes seawater intake and effluent discharge, reducing environmental harm.
-
Enhanced Biosecurity:
Indoor facilities eliminate the risk of pathogens entering from external sources, negating the need for antibiotics and ensuring healthier shrimp.
-
Superior Shrimp Quality:
The controlled use of seawater and other parameters creates optimal conditions for raising whiteleg shrimp with a robust, sweet, and umami flavor profile.

Shirahime Ebi: A Premium Product
Since September 2018, Nissui has offered its biofloc-reared whiteleg shrimp under the brand name "Shirahime Ebi" ("White Princess Shrimp"). Initially available in limited quantities for commercial use, the product is now expanding to restaurants and retail seafood counters across Japan.
A Sustainable Future in Aquaculture
Nissui is positioning its land-based shrimp as a cornerstone of its commitment to creating new, sustainable food sources that support healthy living and environmental responsibility. This initiative underscores Nissui's leadership in innovative aquaculture, paving the way for a sustainable seafood future.
