Arsenic twice as high as normal was found in canned fish from a large manufacturer
(RUSSIAN FEDERATION, 6/4/2024)
The content of arsenic in canned fish from a Russian manufacturer was found to be 2 times higher than the norm. Izvestia writes about this with reference to the Southern Interregional Department of Rosselkhoznadzor.
It is clarified that violations were found in samples of canned cod liver. The study revealed that the safety indicator for arsenic exceeded the norm by two times.
According to the publication, the contents of samples from a batch of 672 cans with a total weight of 168 kilograms, manufactured by Russian Fish World LLC, were checked.
Rosselkhoznadzor reported to Veterinary and Life that since the beginning of this year there have already been 3 cases of excess arsenic in canned fish, while 2 years ago there were none.
“In 2022, 685 samples were taken, and no excess of the permissible level of arsenic was detected; In 2023, 755 samples were taken, exceeding the permissible level of arsenic was detected in 1 case. For the current period, 239 samples of canned fish were taken, in 3 cases an excess of the permissible level of arsenic was detected,” the supervisory agency commented.
The permissible level of arsenic content is set out in the technical regulations of the Customs Union “On the safety of food products” (TR CU 021/2011) and the technical regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union “On the safety of fish and fish products” (TR EAEU 040/2016).
Measures are being taken against violating manufacturers in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, the department clarified.

It is worth noting that representatives of the fishing industry have long been asking for a review of arsenic standards in Russia. The fact is that in the Russian Federation, the content of total arsenic in fish is regulated. For seafood products, this norm is 5 milligrams per kilogram. And if the standard is exceeded, the fish is not allowed to enter the market. Although arsenic, experts explain, is present in fish and seafood in two forms: organic and inorganic. Inorganic arsenic poses a health hazard; these compounds are toxic. At the same time, in seafood, arsenic is often found in organic compounds that are considered either non-toxic or low-toxic to humans.
For example, in China, they only test the content of inorganic arsenic compounds.
