Fishing Landings Down 13% at Start of Year

Official data from the Undersecretary of Fisheries until February 14. The fleet declared discharges of 97,343 tons, compared to 112,123 tons that they had declared last year. The decline in Patagonian shrimp climbs to 27% and the increase in hubbsi hake stands at 24%. Squid shows a decrease of 6%.

The start of activity for the fishing industry seems to have been complicated not only politically, with a new government wanting to renew the Federal Fisheries Law and put out to tender the quotas of quoted species to the highest bidder, but it also started off difficult on the docks themselves.

This is stated in the landing report prepared by the Undersecretary of Fisheries and keeps records of movements by species, fleet and port. Although it is usually a weekly report, the first one from 2024 was only accessed and brings together the statistical numbers until February 14.

In this panorama, a 13% decrease in general discharges of the main species is observed. The report indicates that there were 97,343 tons declared in the period, while last year in the interannual comparison, 112,123 tons had been declared.

The illex squid is the most landed species so far with 37,290 tons. The figure represents a drop of 6% compared to last year when the fleet landed 39,581 tons.

The high level of conflict that is registered in Chubut and that keeps the shrimp harvest paralyzed in provincial waters is reflected in the fishing statistics with a reduction of 27%. Seafood landings at the beginning of 2024 reach 32,285 tons. Last year, 44,247 tons were unloaded.

The one that shows numbers in green is the hubbsi hake. The declared catches rose 24% and reached 20,609 tons, compared to 16,669 tons last year. Among the species that also shows positive signs is the haddock. Their presence in the docks of Mar del Plata increased 115% following the District's decision to make their capture transparent. From 69 tons last year, it now totals 169 tons.

The X-ray of discharges by port shows a predominance of Mar del Plata. At the Buenos Aires maritime terminal, 34,089 tons were recorded, 54% more than the beginning of last year. It is explained by the discharge of the first tide from some jiggers that operated at the edge of the management unit south of 44º South.

Rawson feels the irregular shrimp (Pleoticus Muelleri) harvest and its downloads decreased 27% to 32,160 tons, the same as Puerto Deseado, which registered a similar percentage decrease and totaled 12,157 tons. Puerto Madryn is one of the terminals where discharges were reduced the most: 12,100 tons, 38% less than last year.

Squid unloadings currently mark the performance of maritime terminals. Mar del Plata increased the general numbers because it received almost 14 thousand tons of this resource. The figure represents 203% more than last year.

On the other side of the coin is Madryn, where they received 11,493 tons, 39% less than those landed until February 14, 2023.
