Ireland Has Potential To Become ´Silicon Valley Of Aquatech´
(REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, 10/20/2023)
The following is an excerpt from an article published by Business Plus:
Irish aquatech companies turned over €200m (USD 212M) last year, and growing expertise in the sector means Ireland has the potential to become the “Silicon Valley of Aqautech," Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) Aquatech conference in Killarney has heard.
In the past six years over €15m (USD 16 M) has been invested in aquatech, ie innovation in sustainable seafood farming that can be applied to breeding, raising or harvesting fish, shellfish or aquatic plants, and more than 200 high-tech jobs have been added in the sector in that time
“We have over 60 companies working in aquatech here, and the sector is worth about €200m (USD 212M)," said Caroline Bocquel, CEO of BIM, the state agency responsible for developing the Irish seafood sector.
"Hatch Blue, who we work closely with, is a major aquatech-focused venture capital firm based in Cork, which has already made Irish-based aquaculture investments.
"We’re starting to see some very significant investments and some brilliant ideas – for example, the use of AI to monitor and provide early warnings on the health of aquaculture fish stocks.”
Representatives from the Irish Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) attended the Aquatech -- Ireland's Global Opportunity conference at the Brehon Hotel, along with the senior vice president of the world's first aquatech unicorn, E-fishery, and a number of Irish aquatech entrepreneurs.
The conference also served as the highlight of the BIM Innovation, an intensive two-week programme aimed at developing the technological readiness, industry fitness and commercial scalability of aquatech start-ups.
Funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and now in its sixth year, the initiative seeks projects in Ireland and other European countries that aim to upscale the region’s aquaculture or alt-seafood industries.
Close to 50 projects and companies have completed the Innovation Studio to date, resulting in the aforementioned investment of €15.1m and 200 jobs.
Several companies involved in this year’s Innovation Studio attended a delegation to Southeast Asia earlier this year with Hatch to grow their network and learn more about their potential market. The delegation has secured potential business opportunities on foot of this.
Chairing the panel discussion on the global opportunity for aquatech, BIM development and innovation director Richard Donnelly said that Ireland has the potential to become the Silicon Valley of aquatech, due to a number of factors. [Continues...]
