Law for the preservation of the first 5 maritime miles is promulgated
(PERU, 5/22/2023)
The Law that promotes the preservation of our first 5 maritime miles has been promulgated, and this is great news for Peruvians. There the magic of our sea occurs, where species meet, reproduce and stay healthy so as not to disappear.

The main changes go to the rearrangement of the space: it prohibits high-impact gear such as mechanized seine nets in the first 3 miles, differentiates artisanal fishermen from medium-sized ones, and reaffirms that industrial fishing must take place outside 5 miles.

In addition, it establishes ceilings for the reduction of fines for violators of the fishing law, in order to avoid fishing packages like the one of the previous administration that eliminated 90% of the fines for a series of repeat offenders, thus favoring illegal fishing.

It is the result of joint work between Congress and the Executive. It is time to refine details in the regulation. This law does not solve all the problems of our sea, but it is a step towards a common destiny: a healthy sea that employs and nourishes the 30 million Peruvians.
