Camanchaca projects significant growth in production of frozen horse mackerel, with a new plant inaugurated in Coronel
(CHILE, 5/26/2022)
• The modern facility required an investment of US$ 30 million, and has state-of-the-art Norwegian and Japanese technology for 10 automatic processing lines, with packing capacity and 7 freezing tunnels, for 650 thousand kilos of horse mackerel per day.
• Camanchaca plans to produce about 50 million kilos of frozen jack mackerel during the first year of operation, a significant advance from the 30 million produced in 2020 and the 20 million obtained from third parties in 2021.
• Its construction was achieved in a record 12 months, nearly 800 people participated and its start-up meant the hiring of 120 people, all from the Biobío Region.
Coronel, May 25, 2022.- After 2021 in which Camanchaca did not have its own frozen food plant in its Fishing business in the Biobío Region, yesterday the fishing company gave the official go-ahead for its new frozen food plant in the district of Coronel, in a ceremony headed by its president Jorge Fernández and its general manager, Ricardo García, and which was attended by the mayor, Boris Chamorro, and the presidential delegate Daniela Dresdner.

The modern plant -which required an investment of close to US$30 million- is built on an area of 7,000 square meters and allows direct unloading from five high-seas fishing boats, which guarantees the freshness and quality of the fish. At the same time, it has state-of-the-art Norwegian technology for 10 automatic process lines through which the catches flow and that allow maximizing the yield of the raw material. After its packaging and freezing in 7 cold tunnels with Japanese technology, the new facility allows the final product to be generated for dispatch in a total of approximately 19 hours.

Having started a trial run in February 2022, the plant is now operating at capacity, with the possibility of producing 650,000 kilos of frozen jack mackerel per day, allocating 100% of the catches for direct human consumption. Camanchaca plans to produce about 50 million kilos of frozen jack mackerel during the first year of operation, which represents a significant advance from the 29 and 20 million in 2020 and 2021, the latter in third-party plants during 2021.
“The operation of our new frozen horse mackerel plant in Coronel will allow the optimization of the productive processes of our Pesca Sur division, which will now be concentrated in the same commune and oriented entirely to human consumption. With a global demand for seafood growing a lot around the world, this leaves us in a robust position to continue feeding from the Biobío to markets in the world, such as Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Eastern Europe and Peru”, highlighted the general manager of Camanchaca, Ricardo García Holtz.
The construction of the plant -which was achieved in less than 12 months- required the work of 600 people directly and another 200 indirectly, through local and international service providers. Additionally, its entry into operation meant the hiring of about 120 qualified people who joined the Camanchaca team, 60% women and 40% men, all from the Biobío Region.

It should be noted that the new facility in Coronel joins the canned horse mackerel, fishmeal and fish oil production plants that Camanchaca Pesca Sur already has in the same commune, in addition to the shrimp plant that the fishing division operates in the neighboring commune of Tomé.
