Australis Seafoods increases profitability in Q1, despite lower price of salmon

The salmon company Australis Seafoods reported that in the first quarter of this year it obtained an EBITDA of USD 20.3 million, 66% higher than the same period of 2018, when it obtained USD 12.2 million.

In its report on the consolidated financial results of the first quarter, the company highlighted that the volume harvested in the first three months of 2019 increased significantly, by 86.7%, compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

The volume sold also increased, but to a lesser extent, 25.2% year-on-year. As a result, revenues recorded between January and March 2019 totaled USD 99.6 million, which represents an increase of 27.3% with respect to the same quarter of 2018.
Australis stressed that there was a decrease in prices of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and trout, compared to the same period of 2018, and detailed that the consolidated FOB price was USD 5.69 / kg WFE, versus USD 5.80 / kg WFE in the first quarter of last year. (WFE -Whole Fish Equivalent-: Unit of measurement corresponding to the weight of the eviscerated and bled fish)

In addition, he highlighted that the cost of selling Atlantic salmon decreased by 11.5%, thanks to the good productive performance shown by the harvested centers compared to the same period of the previous year.
The cost of trout, on the other hand, increased by 12.8%, which is explained by the harvest term during the quarter of one of the company's centers.
