Ilya Shestakov: "An increase in the volume of resource research of salmon stocks in 2021 and interstate scientific cooperation will increase the efficiency of the fishery"

At the initiative of the Federal Fisheries Agency, on February 19, 2021, an international scientific conference was held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the status and redistribution of Pacific salmon populations in the North Pacific and the contribution of artificial reproduction and its repopulation

The event was carried out in a hybrid way (online and offline). The debate was attended by experts from Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan and the Republic of Korea. More than 70 sites joined the conference, in total, more than 500 people from all over Russia and other countries.

Scientists, experts and fishmongers discussed the reasons for the decline in the abundance of Pacific salmon and agreed to continue monitoring the migrations of these fish, as well as to intensify the study of their marine life to improve the accuracy of forecasts.

In his speech to conference participants, the head of the Federal Fisheries Agency, Ilya Shestakov, noted that accurate forecasting of approaches and catch is the most important component for successful fishing, as Pacific salmon is a valuable and demanded resource in the world fish market and strategically important for our country, mainly for the socio-economic development of the Far East.

Salmon is a very important fishing object for our neighbors in the Pacific basin, mainly the United States and Japan. The total average annual maximum catch of salmon in the North Pacific fell in 1995-2019, the maximum catch was recorded in 2009 and amounted to 1 million 138 thousand tons.

The record for salmon fishing in the territory of a country was recorded in Russia in 2018: the catch reached almost 680 thousand tons, or 63% of the world total. This is an unprecedented figure in the entire history of observation.

At the end of 2020, the catch by Russian fishermen was lower than expected, even with a cautious approach to assessing the catch. As Ilya Shestakov pointed out, 300 thousand tons of Russian catch (this amount was taken in the Far East in 2020) is not critical compared to the previous period of population depression, which was observed in 1959-1973. At this time, the world average annual salmon harvest amounted to 407 thousand tons, at least 331 thousand tons for all the states that catch Pacific salmon.

“Noticing a negative trend during its onset gives us the opportunity to prevent its development and, ideally, to radically change the situation. That is why we declared 2021 the year of the Pacific salmon in Russia, adopted a specific program, and increased the volume of resource research to assess the status of stocks in the Far East. Russian science sees a general redistribution of salmon populations in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, in this regard, we have initiated a discussion of the problem at a high level of experts "- said the head of the Federal Fisheries Agency." I am confident that the conclusions of the conference will form the basis of the program for a more rational management of the salmon fishery, taking into account hydrological and climatic changes both at the national and interstate levels, " said Ilya Shestakov at the end of his speech.

As a result of the event, it was decided to hold the next international conference in 2022, in which, in addition to the status of the aquatic biological resources in the North Pacific, the economic and social aspects of fishing and reproduction in the North Pacific region will be considered. .
