Governor of Tierra del Fuego Rosana Bertone gave express instructions to the Chief of Staff Leonardo Gorbacz and the Secretary of official representation for the Malvinas issue, Jorge Argüello to initiate a series of actions aimed at preventing the Foreign Ministry from moving forward with measures that would be enormously damaging to our sovereignty over Malvinas.

In an interministerial meeting held at the Foreign Ministry, members of the provincial cabinet came to know that a great variety of points were analyzed in relation to the situation in the area adjacent to the exclusive Economic Zone of Argentina, including some of extreme danger for the legal position of our country in relation to the Malvinas Issue.

According to Dr. Jorge Argüello, "we know that in that meeting it was evaluated to advance in shaping a fisheries management organization, and the consequence of that decision would be the recognition of UK as a coastal state in the South Atlantic, which would be disastrous for our claim sovereignty over Malvinas."

The Falkland Islands, a South Atlantic territory disputed between the U.K. and Argentina. The Falkland Islands are administered by the U.K. as an overseas territory, but are also claimed based on historical arguments by Argentina, which calls them "las Islas Malvinas". Both countries have signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which defines ownership and legal rights for the waters surrounding coastal countries.(Photo: courtesy polgeonow.com)

Given the knowledge about the treatment of these issues, added to recent statements to the press by members of the illegitimate British government of the Malvinas Islands in relation to their interest in forming an RFMO (Regional Fisheries Management Organization) in the South Atlantic area, Governor Rosana Bertone has decided to take a series of measures to protect our legitimate rights over the Malvinas Islands, South Sandwich Islands, South Georgia and the surrounding maritime areas.

In the first place, she has instructed the Secretariat of Official Representation for the Malvinas Issue to hold a meeting with the authorities of the Argentine Foreign Ministry to demand the pertinent explanations. At the same time, she will present, together with the national legislators of the province, a bill aimed at  repealing Law 25.259, which approved the "New York Agreement of 1995", which is the basis for the creation of this type of Regional Organizations.

Finally, she will propose the Secretariat to hold a meeting with the Malvinas Parliamentary Observatory of the National Congress in order to unify the necessary efforts for the protection, in a coordinated and consensual manner, of our legitimate rights over the South Atlantic islands and their surrounding maritime areas.
