Wal-Mart begins marketing certified fish
(BRAZIL, 11/22/2010)
A company from Pernambuco has launched the first line of certified fish in the country, sold through Wal-Mart supermarkets in Pernambuco.
The seal attests to the origin of products, and ensures that resources were captured following strict regulations regarding sustainability and respecting the period of breeding and spawning, among other issues.
The company which adopted this strategy, Noronha Pescados, points out that none of their commercial species are threatened by extinction, several of which are native to the Amazon.
The company invested around BRL 1.25 million (USD 727,000) for the implementation of the new line of certified fish.
"We see a trend in increasing demand in the consumption of fish, although the production has weaknesses due to predatory fishing," said Luiz Herrisson, communications director of Wal-Mart Brazil.
"For example, lobsters could become extinct by 2018. This is an urgent problem," he added.
He also recalled that seven months ago, the headquarters of Wal-Mart of the United States summoned all their Brazilian suppliers of fish and proposed the creation of lines with a certificate of sustainability.
"Noronha Pescados was immediately interested," said Herrisson.
Meanwhile, Guilherme Blanke, Director of Noronha Pescados said: "Throughout the world, sustainability is being considered as a crucial segment of fishing. In the European market, starting next year, only certified products will be sold."
Furthermore relating to the Friend of the Sea seal, the products have a tracking code with detailed information on fishing, the boat that captured it and the date.
"That guarantees the origin to the consumer and the customer," said the Brazilian company executive.
It is expected that the new line of fish represents an annual production of 2,000 tonnes, which is 5 per cent of fish products sold by Wal-Mart in the country.
The line 'Sabores da Amazônia' includes the following species: pirarucu, acoupa weakfish (Cynoscion acoupa), smooth weakfish (Cynoscion leiarchus) and surubí, among others. The line 'Oceans' includes tuna, golden carp, horse mackerel, among other resources, and the 'Acqua' line, tilapia and shrimp, reports Diario de Pernambuco.
