The Nasdaq Salmon Index, a 30-year-old benchmark tracking salmon prices, has been sold by Nasdaq to Kontali, a Norwegian fish farming analytics company...
The Nasdaq Salmon Index, which provides pricing data for Norwegian salmon total exports, has been acquired by Kontali.
“With Kontali as the new owner and administrator, we are pleased to see the 30-year-old benchmark history remain unbroken. Kontali has the knowledge, experience, development capacity and trustworthiness to support and strengthen the position of the Salmon Index under their own brand,” says Erik Flingtorp, Global Head of Seafood at Nasdaq.

Since 2008, the Nasdaq Salmon Index has been operated by Nasdaq. The index is a well-established benchmark for the entire salmon value chain, serving as a price reference for physical contracts and as a tool for analysts, academia, investors, and banks. The benchmark represents 95% of the index used for derivatives contracts traded at the exchange Fish Pool.
Kontali’s Jan Erik Øksenvåg has been the index auditor for the Nasdaq Salmon Index for many years. “Our connection to this index is strong. Now, we are taking on a new role to ensure the continued development of this industry-critical instrument. While it will be ‘business as usual’ for all users, we have plans to enhance and introduce more services and features to the index in the future,” says Øksenvåg.
“Based on feedback from stakeholders and contributors, consensus seems to be that Kontali is the best ‘home’ for the index. We are honored by their trust and will do our utmost to fulfill expectations,” says Øksenvåg.

In 2020, Kontali was acquired by Arendals Fossekompani ASA Fossekompani’s portfolio company Alytic.
“This deal reaffirms Kontali’s strong position in the seafood industry. Building on decades of experience and insight, Kontali continues to provide data and analyses that adds value to the entire industry,” says Espen Zachariassen, CEO of Alytic.
“Kontali has the knowledge, experience, development capacity and trustworthiness to support and strengthen the position of the Salmon Index under their own brand,” says Erik Flingtorp.
