Scotland's Chief Statistician has published the 2009 Sea Fisheries Statistics showing the highest value for landings in the decade at GBP 443 million (EUR 529.5 million) for 378,000 tonnes of fish. Value rose by 10 per cent while volume grew by 2 per cent.
"Given the very challenging backdrop against which the industry has been operating with ongoing draconian European Union (EU) restrictions and the economic downturn, it is encouraging that overall the value and volume of landings has increased,” Scottish Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead commented.
Shellfish landings constituted 32 per cent by value and 18 per cent by volume of all Scottish based vessel landings, with the total value at GBP 143 million (EUR 170.9 million) for 69,000 tonnes. Volume jumped by 7 per cent between 2008...
