Latvian sprats are exempt from a requirement of reduced maximum benzopyrene levels because the sprats fall under the jurisdiction of a separate chapter in a new European Commission (EC) draft regulation passed last month, according to representatives from the Agriculture Ministry.
The maximum benzopyrene level for the smoked fish Latvian sprats, the regulation says, will remain steady after 1 January 2014, but must be cut by more than twofold for all other smoked fish products.
Latvia made an argument for differentiating the traditional and specific properties of its smoked sprats from other smoked fish products. Experts from the EC and other European Union (EU) member states were convinced, reports The Baltic Course.
Fisheries Association President Didzis Smits said that EC’s conclusion resulted directly from the efforts of Latvia’s Foreign Ministry and Agriculture Ministry. The final decision is forthcoming, but he remains hopeful.&...
