"In an already bleak provincial economy, these cuts are the nail in the coffin for the inshore shrimp fishery," the union president Keith Sullivan stated in a news release.
Meanwhile, the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced that the total allowable catch for Shrimp Fishing Area 6 for this season will be reduced to 10,400 tonnes for the upcoming harvest, which represents 63 per cent.
Referring to the announcement, the union said it is a 78 per cent reduction over the past two years, which will lead to thousands of people to face financial hardship as a result.
