Transport equipment manufacturing company FishPac Pty Ltd has managed to perform the first ever fully successful live shipment using the world’s only approved live fish transport system sustained by oxygen.
The shipment, which transported 400-900 gram greenlip abalone specimens from Melbourne to Los Angeles, managed to arrive with zero mortality, representing 30 per cent mortality reduction through any other transportation system previously used.
According to the firm, this boost will be highly beneficial for the country’s AUD 81 million (EUR 54.2 million) live, fresh or chilled abalone export market, which in 2011-12 accounted for 50 per cent of all the exports of the species.
“Greenlip abalone is a delicacy in many Asian cultures, however, it has never been successfully shipped live due to their fragility,” said Peter Rankin, FishPac’s business development manager, qualified marine biologist and former abalone farmer.
Among the benefits of the FishPac™ system, which is being tested in Germany with shipments to the UAE, the most important are:
- Shippers’ revenue, margin and profit increased;
- Proven reliable performance over 25000 bins/totes shipped;
- Low stress levels for the fish;
- Low labour cost in preparing shipments;
- Approved by aviation authorities and airlines.
The firm has pointed out that thanks to the new system, which is designed, moulded, manufactured and assembled in Melbourne, their customers will be able to increase their volumes, which are forecast to raise an additional 20 per cent in future shipments.
FishPac Pty Ltd works with both seafood exporting companies and airlines around the world looking at transporting Live Fish via air, road or rail freight using this innovative system.
