Mackerel are still scattered both in the sea and on the coast.

Mackerel:

It was a weak mackerel week with a modest 12,200 tonnes in the record. The best catch day was Monday with 4,200 t, while at the weekend there were small quantities due to gales in the mackerel fields.

The ringnot group has contributed the most with 9,200 t, and from the other groups the coastal fleet has fished 2,200 t, SUK 500 t and the trawl group 300 t.

The boats have hunted mackerel in three different areas, in the Norwegian Sea for the main part of the fleet, in the UK zone for some and on the coast for the smallest boats.

From the fishermen, there are reports of little collection of mackerel in the Norwegian Sea and on the coast. South-east of Shetland, in British waters, there has been gathering for short periods so that a net can be set. From here, 6,900 t of the week's quantity have been fished.

The sizes of the mackerel also vary from the different areas. In the Norwegian Sea the average is around 450g, in the UK zone around 400g and on the coast the mackerel is much smaller with average weights around 250g.

We are now registering that autumn has brought low pressure activity in the North East Atlantic. The storm that hampered fishing at the weekend will continue in the first part of the coming week.

Fishing on "Kanten":

From five different boats that have fished on "Kanten" for fishmeal/oil, we have 720 t of norwegian pout, 620 t of North Sea herring, just under 500 t of blue whiting and 190 t of horse mackerel.

Foreign boats:

We have reported two nice catches from foreign boats. The Icelandic boat Vilhelm Thorsteinsson has been fishing for herring east of Iceland for the last period and they had a catch of just under 1,700 t. These are large herring with average weights in the range of 367-380 g.

The Danish trawler "Themis" fished 1,000 t of sea sprat for fishmeal/oil use. They have fished in the EU zone on traditional sprat fields.
