Frozen hairtail import volume and amount both decreased

By July 2022, a total of 724,699 tons of seafood were imported, of which 6,767 tons, or 0.93%, of frozen hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), or beltfish, were imported.
In 2021 of the previous year, 7,686 tons were imported, accounting for 1.32% of 583,312 tons.
Imports of frozen hair tail in July were 1,435 tons, down 47% from the previous year's 2,726 tons.
The cumulative import volume until July was 6,767 tons, a decrease of 12% compared to the previous year's 7,868 tons.
The average import volume in July from 2017 to 2022 was 2,242 tons, and the import of frozen hairtail in the past six years was the highest at 13,794 tons in 2017 and the lowest at 6,767 tons in 2022.
Frozen hairtail were imported from Morocco, a major exporting country, in the order of 1,865 tons, Senegal 1,435 tons, Ecuador 735 tons, Oman 689 tons, and South Africa 520 tons. It was formed in the order of USD 2.94/kg for the maroccan product, Ecuador USD 1.75/kg, and Oman USD 1.41/kg.
Imports of frozen hair tail in July were USD 2.67 million, down 73% from USD 9.92 million in the previous year, and the cumulative import amount was USD 21.18 million, down 28% from USD 29.27 million in the same period of the previous year.
The average unit price of imports in July was USD 1.86/kg, down 48.8% from USD 3.64/kg in the same period of the previous year.
In Korea, the largehead hairtail is called galchi (갈치), in which gal (갈) came from Middle Korean galh (갏) meaning "sword" and -chi (치) is a suffix for "fish". It is popular for frying or grilling
