Marine Harvest given 30 more days to recapture escaped salmon

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) has extended for 30 days the term that the salmon company Marine Harvest had to recover the fish that escaped last month from one of its farming centres.
In the incident, which occurred on July 15 at Punta Redonda centre, located in Calbuco district, Los Lagos region, about 700,000 salmon escaped.
The General Fisheries and Aquaculture Act (LGPA) establishes that in case of fish escape, the company is forced to recover 10 per cent of the fish within a period of 30 days. But SERNAPESCA national director Alicia Gallardo explained that this term may be extendable for another period of the same duration, and this is exactly what happened.
"Due to SERNAPESCA’s resolution, an extension of 30 days has been established, so now the term of the company would expire on September 3. If by this date it is not possible to recover 10 per cent, the act establishes that there is presumption of environmental damage and we would have to make the corresponding complaint," said Gallardo during a recent visit to Los Lagos region.
If this happens, the environmental court is the government agency that will have to take the case.
"We would have to make the report, but the court could ask for more information, before which the company could provide additional information. There the case enters a field belonging to Justice, and we will have to wait to see what is decided at the end of the process," said SERNAPESCA director.
