This measure constitutes a great achievement for the shrimp sector, as it strengthens its sanitary conditions and allows Peru to begin negotiations with international markets.
The Ministry of Production, through the National Fisheries Health Organization (Sanipes), received approval from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) for the self-declaration of Peru as a country free of four diseases that affect shrimp, after evidence of compliance with the WOAH Aquatic Animal Health Code guidelines was provided.

Self-declarations facilitate negotiations with other countries by having sanitary measures that provide a worldwide guarantee that Peru is free of any disease. This benefits national aquaculture operators, as it makes it possible for their hydrobiological resources and products to access new international markets.
Sanipes reported that Peru declares itself free of Taura syndrome virus (TSV), decapod iridescent virus isotope 1 (DIV1), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) and yellow head virus genotype 1 (YHV1). ), which affect the prawns Penaeus vannamei.
The executive president of Sanipes, Mónica Saavedra Chumbe, explained that the publication of the self-declarations before the WHOA constitutes a great achievement for the Peruvian shrimp sector, as it strengthens its sanitary conditions. “This allows Peru to begin negotiations with international markets,” she said.
During the first quarter of 2024, Sanipes began the self-declaration process through the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), an entity that represents the country before the WOAH, with the purpose of obtaining recognition before said world organization and its member countries. in order to promote transparency and facilitate the shrimp trade.
Self-declarations are the result of monitoring the absence of infectious diseases for at least the last two years, as well as the specific legal health framework implemented, diagnostic capacity, prevention measures, early notification and response, early prevention mechanisms. and the biosafety measures implemented by aquaculture production centers nationwide.

It should be noted that the self-declarations made by member countries to the WOAH are important commercial tools. This is because they make it possible to visualize the global health status of the absence of a disease notifiable to the WOAH in a certain area, compartment or country, as is the case of Peru.
