La Libertad Avanza presented a project to lift the prohibitions that prevent the development of aquaculture for the exploitation of salmonids. They would keep the implementation of marine cages in the Beagle Channel prohibited. The initiative is in line with Mileism's vision and policy of broad 'deregulation'.

The provincial deputy Agustín Coto of the TDF Republican Party - La Libertad Avanza presented a bill last week that promotes the lifting of the prohibitions on the development of salmon farming on the island of Tierra del Fuego.

The libertarian legislator formalized an initiative "that aims to expand the regulatory framework established by Provincial Law No. 244, promoting the sustainable development of aquaculture and maximizing economic benefits in the short, medium and long term."

“This law provides a solid legal framework to drive economic growth, promote environmental sustainability and encourage innovation in the aquaculture sector. Its implementation is crucial to take advantage of the potential benefits of aquaculture while addressing the challenges and guaranteeing responsible management of our aquatic resources,” stated Javier Milei's representative in Tierra del Fuego.

“Hippies con OSDE” ("Hippies with Private Health Insurance")

Days ago, Coto had published on his "X" network a photo where he displayed the prices of a Fuegian restaurant where a dish of toothfish cost $30,000 (USD 32.63) and salmon $26,000 (USD 28.28). “That salmon that you see on the menu had to be imported, in dollars, because some decided to prohibit us from being able to produce them ourselves,” he reproached while announcing that “we will present the law to allow, encourage and control salmon farming. For the economic development of Tierra del Fuego and the country, and so that no transnational hippie NGO with OSDE tells us how or what to live on. “Long live Freedom Damn!”, He closed.

Free initiative and free competition

After the July 9 holiday, the Provincial Aquaculture Production Law project was presented (expansion of the regime provided by Provincial Law No. 244), it consists of 62 articles and mainly lifts all the prohibitions that were imposed in 2021 and 2022 to prohibit the salmon farms.

“The enforcement authority must promote the establishment of aquaculture establishments by encouraging free initiative and free competition. Likewise, the implementing authority must facilitate access to concessions for the commercial production of aquatic species through a simplified and transparent process. Innovative and sustainable practices in the sector will be encouraged, without imposing unnecessary restrictions that limit the participation of new actors or the expansion of existing ones,” indicates one of the items of the initiative.

On the other hand, it clarifies that “the cultivation of salmonid species can be carried out through a Recirculating Aquaculture System. The implementation of marine cages in the Beagle Channel is strictly prohibited. The implementation of any salmon farming system in closed water courses, lakes, lagoons and any other wetland, whether or not they have an outlet to other closed or open water courses, is prohibited.

“The hatching of eggs must be enabled and certified by SENASA taking into consideration the provisions of the application authority,” he adds.

Deregulation

The axis of the project is in article 58, which stipulates: Provincial Law No. 1355 is repealed. This norm approved in 2021 determines: “It is prohibited in the lake and maritime jurisdictional waters of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and Atlantic Islands South, all salmon farming and production activities in order to ensure the protection, preservation and safeguarding of natural resources, genetic resources and lake ecosystems”, and thus closed the possibility of exploitation of salmon farms in that Patagonian jurisdiction.
