James Bates, Executive Secretary of FIFCA, the Association of Fishing Companies of the Falkland Islands, as in 2023, attended with an important private and official delegation from the Islands to the Seafood Expo Fair, which is held annually in Barcelona , which he described as excellent and the most important in its field. Although this year is short of superlatives, he should have reiterated his words because it is impressive how the exhibition constantly grows.

The 30th anniversary of the Seafood Expo took place during the last three days of April, the largest in its history, bringing together the seafood industry to face-to-face business on a global scale.

In fact, the Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global is the largest and most diverse event for the seafood industry, organized by Diversified Communications of the United States and grew 4% in 2024 compared to 2023.

The gigantic event venue, the Gran Feria de Barcelona, occupied 51,000 square meters and had an estimated impact of more than 156 million Euros. For the first time the fair had to expand to an additional space, making it the largest in its history in terms of net square meters per exhibition space.

This year's fair was attended by 2,244 exhibiting companies from 87 different countries located in national and regional pavilions, bringing together the most important of the leading companies from all over the world (about 34,000 people), including suppliers of seafood, equipment, from packaging companies and services, retail buyers, businesses that are responsible for the service and distribution of fishing food, importers, government officials and industry leaders. Among the 2,244 companies that displayed and exhibited, 657 did so for the first time.

On display at Seafood Processing Global, every aspect of processing and services for the seafood industry, including packaging machinery, chilling and refrigeration equipment and supplies, primary and secondary processing equipment, hygiene control and health, quality safety, aquaculture equipment. transportation, cold storage, solutions for traceability and other complementary processes were deployed with great success and access for interested parties.

In view of the success achieved by FIFCA in 2023, the Falkland delegation was very interested in continuing to advance in this year's exhibition, for which 23 delegates from the association attended, all very interested in raising the profile of the industry. the Islands in general.

Once again the delegation was lucky enough to be able to demonstrate some of the best Falklands fishing products such as spicy squid, toothfish skewers, different ceviches and haddock with an Andalusian touch, a recipe that our chef refused to share. . We also took the opportunity to display some native Falklands drinks and soft drinks that went down very well with the guests who attended the stand.

Just like last year, it was used to promote other areas of innovation in the Falklands, and demonstrate that although we are short in stature and geographically remote, we were also able to demonstrate that we know how to innovate and produce world-class products.

We can also anticipate that we are already planning and organizing the execution of Expo 2025, and FIFCA has already communicated to the organizers its intention to be present. It must be taken into account that the participation of the Islands also evolves and therefore the activities planned at the stand, such as the confidence to arrange meetings with our partners and potential new clients, are very interesting to appreciate and promote.

Finally Bates said that FIFCA would like to thank everyone who in some way contributed to its success, whether it was getting the products from the Falklands to Vigo and then to Barcelona, to those who collaborated in manning the stand and representing FIFCA in general.

As Executive Secretary of FIFCA, special thanks go to Argos Group, Beauchene Fishing Company, Bold Ventures, CFL, Dragon Fishing, Fortuna Group, Golden Touza, Polar Fishing, RBC, Seafish Falklands and Sulivan Shipping Services for the support provided in making of Seafood Expo 2024, a reality and the extraordinary success achieved for the Falkland Islands fishing industry.
