A new step towards transparent and participatory governance for the fishing sector

The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture participated this week in the ninth version of the international conference Our Ocean, which had as its motto “an ocean of potential” and took place between April 15 and 17 in Athens, Greece.

With the focus on addressing the main challenges facing marine ecosystems and the different forms of leadership for the conservation and sustainable development of the activities that depend on it, a new Our Ocean event was held this week in Greece.

For this reason, and under the representation of the head of the Legal Division, Dr. Rocío Parra, different conversations were held with delegations, particularly with the European Union, to address challenges and common tasks around ocean care and development. of sustainable sector activities.

On the occasion, the principle and value of fisheries transparency was also reaffirmed to contribute to increasing trust between sectoral actors and civil society as a whole, reducing the questions that may exist in public institutions and in this way, having a fisheries management free of questions.

For this reason, Subpesca - in the voice of Dr. Rocío Parra - made official, within the framework of this international conference, adherence to the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (The Fisheries Transparency Initiative, FiTI), which aims to increase transparency and participation in fisheries governance for the benefit of more sustainable management. This standard has as key principles the participation of interested actors, a progressive improvement in this matter, transparency in the public domain and promotion of public debate.

This announcement constitutes another step on the path of a broader commitment to fisheries transparency, given that it is framed in the 6th Open State Action Plan, presented this year, which incorporated the implementation of this international standard as an objective.

Added to this effort is that the draft New Fisheries Law - currently being processed in the Chamber of Deputies - includes transparency in the fishing sector as one of the guiding principles of the new norm that is currently being discussed in particular by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission of the Lower House.
