In the last week of March, Puerto Montt, Chile, became the epicentre of the largest aquaculture fair in the southern hemisphere – Aquasur. This 3-day event, which attracted over 22,000 attendees from more than 20 countries, served as a crucial platform for industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and challenges in the salmon sector.

The impact of the aquaculture industry in Chile

Aquaculture stands as a cornerstone of Chile's economy, with the salmon industry holding particular significance. As one of the world's largest producers of farmed salmon, Chile's exports play a pivotal role in global seafood markets. The majority of Chilean salmon is exported to markets in North America, Europe, and Asia, with the United States and Japan being key destinations.

The industry’s seasonal success is closely monitored, not only reflecting Chile's capacity to meet global seafood demands but also spotlighting the country's proficiency in sustainable aquaculture practices. Such practices are fundamental to maintaining the industry's long-term viability and environmental stewardship. Beyond its economic impact in the country, the salmon industry fosters employment opportunities, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the region.

Seamless and integrated solutions for salmon’s supply chain

Maersk reaffirmed its commitment to the salmon industry by participating in Aquasur 2024. The Maersk stand emerged as a central meeting point, welcoming customers and stakeholders to discuss their needs and explore Maersk's cold chain logistics capabilities specifically for the salmon and aquaculture industry. Beyond networking, it was an opportunity to connect with local customers and discuss their needs and the latest trends in the aquaculture market, ensuring that our solutions remain aligned with the industry's evolving needs.

During the event, Maersk showcased cutting-edge end-to-end solutions tailored specifically for the salmon industry. From ensuring freshness and quality throughout multiple modes of transportation via land, air, and sea to utilizing controlled atmosphere equipment for optimal preservation, the company demonstrated its commitment to delivering excellence at every stage of the supply chain. Moreover, the integration of advanced tracking and monitoring technologies provided customers with transparency and assurance regarding the status and quality of their shipments.

As part of the solutions presented during the event, discussions on air freight solutions to reach key markets in a speedy way exemplified Maersk's dedication to providing comprehensive logistics solutions tailored to the needs of the salmon industry.

Furthermore, Maersk highlighted its ongoing investment in the region, particularly with the Maersk Cold Store in Puerto Montt. This strategic investment reinforces the company's commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and capabilities, ensuring seamless operations and optimal storage conditions for Chilean aquaculture products.

"Within our Cold Store product in the area, we have set two key objectives. Firstly, we aim to meet the growing demands of our customers. To achieve this, we are working diligently to double our storage capacity and improve our response times to cargo requests. Secondly, we are focused on enhancing the sustainability of our service by obtaining LEED certifications and adapting our chambers to Maersk's global standards. With these efforts, we not only seek to meet our customers' expectations but also actively contribute to a more sustainable and responsible future", says Juan Eduardo Ritz, Head of Cold Chain Storage in Latin America, Maersk

During the trade show, Johan Bacigalupo, Head of Integrated Sales of Protein and Dairy for Maersk in Latin America, took the stage to deliver a technical talk titled “Transforming the Salmon Supply Chain: A Holistic Approach to Drive Efficiency and Sustainability.” His presentation offered valuable insights into optimizing supply chains within the salmon industry, emphasizing the efforts and investments Maersk is making to assist customers in achieving their sustainability goals.

In the salmon industry, we have been actively engaged for many years, and in recent years, with much greater intensity and relevance. We are actively striving to bring our organization's integrative vision to an industry that requires it due to its current level of connectivity.

"We see an industry concerned with production, processing, and logistics, and as an organization, we can support connecting the entire supply chain, from the factory where an export or sale begins, to a customer's cold storage facility or even to the home of an individual consumer", says Johan Bacigalupo Head of Integrated Sales, Protein and Dairy in West Coast South America, Maersk

By offering seamless and integrated logistics solutions, Maersk continues to support the growth and sustainability of the aquaculture sector, paving the way for a more efficient, resilient, and environmentally conscious future.
