IFFO: Global Fishmeal and Fish Oil Production Starts 2025 Strongly

2025 Global Fishmeal and Fish Oil Production Off to a Good Start

Market intelligence reports* indicate a significant increase in global fishmeal production for January 2025, rising approximately 75% compared to January 2024. This surge was predominantly driven by a 300% increase in Peruvian output. Chile, the USA, Spain, and African nations also reported positive growth in fishmeal production compared to the same period last year.

Similarly, global fish oil output in January 2025 increased by 71% year-over-year, again largely attributable to Peru. Other regions, with the exception of Northern Europe, also recorded higher fish oil production compared to January 2024.

*Data are based on statistics provided by IFFO members in Chile, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Norway, the UK, the USA, Peru, South Africa, and Spain, representing 40% of global fishmeal production and 50% of fish oil output.

China's 2024 Aquafeed Production and Sales Decline

According to the China Feed Industry Association (CFIA), aquafeed production in 2024 decreased by 3.5% year-on-year, while domestic aquafeed sales fell by approximately 10%.

This decline was primarily due to unfavorable weather conditions for aquaculture, persistently low farm-gate prices, and farmers' efforts to reduce costs by limiting compound feed usage. Concurrently, pig feed production, another significant consumer of fishmeal, decreased by 3.9% year-on-year in 2024, reflecting lower pig supply and pork production.

Until the next fishing season commences in September 2025, China's fishmeal and fish oil production is expected to rely primarily on frozen fish and imports, such as sardines.
