The Minister of Production, Ana María Choquehuanca, highlighted that this agreement is a great advance to guarantee the conservation and sustainable use of the giant squid fishery, considered the second most important in the country, after anchovy.

This agreement seeks to increase biological fishing and technological research on the giant squid, through collaboration with the Peruvian artisanal jigging fleet, to carry out detailed research on the resource.

These investigations will focus on facilitating the boarding of observers on board, with the objective of constantly monitoring the squid fishery, as part of a monitoring program for said fishery.

Likewise, the collaboration focuses on applying satellite and acoustic technology, as well as fishing gear engineering to promote improvements in the fleet's operation, and providing relevant training to fishermen and crew members on the fishery, biology and information collection. on board, which allow the recording of incidental catches and losses of jigging lines during fishing operations.

This agreement will provide the opportunity to develop responsible fishing strategies and practices that will minimize negative impacts on marine ecosystems and promote the conservation of the species, strengthening cooperation and dialogue between the different actors involved in fishing for the resource.
