Weeks ago, the Consejo Federal Pesquero had set a schedule of early opening dates for squid, conditioning the entry of the jigging fleet south of 44°S to first exploring south of 49°S. The sector chambers requested to review the decision, indicating that good results have never been achieved in the extreme south.
The CFP reviewed what was resolved and modified the schedule, maintaining the scheme that requires that they first enter well south and then be able to fish below 44°S. Different sources in the jigging sector affirm that the majority of the fleet will begin operating from January 12, 2024, and there will be few that leave on January 2 south of 49°S.

In last week's session, the Federal Fisheries Council received proposals from CAPA and CEPA that requested that the decision adopted in CFP Minute No. 37/2023 regarding the early opening of the 2024 squid season be reviewed, bringing it forward to January 10, 2024 for the entire fleet, given that operations south of parallel 49° S in search of the Sudpatagónico Stock (SSP) have been unsuccessful in recent years.

Through note DNI No. 126/2023, INIDEP has stated that the early start of the season facilitates the use of the Summer Spawning Stock (SDV), made up of squid that by mid-January have already passed the reproductive process and are close to the end of the life cycle.
Likewise, it points out that this stock is captured until mid-February between parallels 44 - 48° South latitude, west of the 62° West longitude meridian, where coexistence with the SSP is very low or non-existent. For this reason, it is feasible to advance the start of the season.

Finally, it was unanimously decided to provide for the early opening of the capture season for the squid species (Illex argentinus), as follows:
- between parallels 49° and 52° South latitude, from 0:00 on January 2, 2024;
- south of the 44° parallel of South latitude, exclusively to vessels that have operated south of the 49° parallel of South latitude for at least three (3) days on fishing tasks, from 0:00 on January 7 from 2024;
- south of parallel 44° South latitude for the rest of the fleet, from 0:00 on January 12, 2024.
