Baja California Sur Strengthens Oyster Production for Export to the United States

The head of the Secretaría de Pesca, Acuacultura y Desarrollo Agropecuario (SEPADA), José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán, announced that in 2024 the construction of an oyster laboratory (Crassostrea gigas) will be carried out with the aim of doubling the production of this bivalve mollusk.
José Alfredo Bermúdez Beltrán recognized that the state has been consolidated in first place in the production of complete cycle oyster farming at the national level; per year on average they generate 2,400 tons of this bivalve mollusk, equivalent to an economic value of 152 million pesos (USD 8.73 M).
In this sense, he recalled that there are 140 Aquaculture Production Units dedicated to the aquaculture of Japanese oysters, scallops, among others, therefore, this year the aquaculture community was supported with an investment of 13.3 million pesos (USD 0.77). M), through the State Program for the Promotion of Agricultural, Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, in the delivery of materials such as cultivation gear, boats, oyster seeds for pre-fattening and outboard motors for aquaculture use.
He contextualized that, among the main actions to reorganize and give impetus to the fishing sector, the implementation of aquaculture stands out, this with the objective of reducing fishing overexploitation, which is why the Government of the Fourth Transformation supports health and safety, for fish, crustaceans and bivalve mollusks, whose investment is more than 5 million pesos (USD 0.29 M), through the leadership of the State Aquaculture Health and Safety Committee.
