Good news from the Loligo and hake fisheries

The Director of Natural Resources of the Falkland Islands, Dr. Andrea Clausen provided this week, before the Fisheries Commission, an update of the catches, which were positive for both the Loligo squid, Calamari, and the hake.

In effect, the second season of the Calamari, which ended on October 3, completed 34,750 tons, the highest figure for the second season since 2018. However, unfortunately this volume of catch also meant the death of 43 sea lions.

Hake continues as the largest item in the finfish category. As of November 23, the total hake catch for all of 2021 reached just under 59,000 tons, in itself a total greater than any other season, according to the records.

The committee discussed an assessment of the finfish fishery, with hake described as a major species in a multi-species system, which has to be managed well to protect the ecosystem. There is an ongoing problem with ‘choke’ species - a species with a low quota that can cause a vessel to stop fishing even if they still have quota for other species.

Committee member Michael Poole of Fortuna Ltd acknowledged there is “no easy answer to the problem of choke species”.
 
The Fisheries Department also recommended that license fees for the finfish fishery should be held in place, which was welcomed by industry representatives.(PN)
