Government begins the second anchovy season in the north-central zone, with one of the highest quotas in the last 10 years

This new season will generate 49 thousand jobs in Peru. - A quota of 2.51 million tons of anchovy was established.

With the aim of strengthening the economic reactivation of the country, the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, accompanied by the Minister of Production, Sergio González, led the first unloading of the start of the second anchovy fishing season in the North-Central zone of the Peruvian coast at the Exalmar fishing plant in Callao.

It is worth mentioning that the second fishing season has a quota of 2.51 million tons, being the third highest in the last decade. This activity is crucial for national economic development, since it is expected to generate an impact of 0.8% on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 2024 and contribute 8% to national exports. Estimates project foreign exchange earnings of approximately USD 1,349 million, consolidating the role of the fishing sector as a fundamental pillar for the country's economy.

During her speech, President Boluarte underlined the government's commitment to the responsible and sustainable management of hydrobiological resources, highlighting the role of scientific research in decision-making.

"Today we gather to commemorate a milestone in the fishing sector: the start of a second anchovy fishing season this year, which not only contributes significantly to our economy, but also strengthens the employment and well-being of thousands of Peruvian families. This is the result of a management that prioritizes sustainability and the needs of all Peruvians,", said the president.

She also highlighted the role of PRODUCE, through the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) in the management of fishing activity. ““Following the scientific recommendations of IMARPE, we started this season with great expectations, ensuring responsible fishing that respects the balance of our marine ecosystem. Thanks to these practices, our country has been recognized as one of the best managed fisheries worldwide, an achievement that fills us with pride and responsibility,” she said.

The anchovy fishing season also has a significant impact on employment. More than 49,000 workers, between direct and indirect jobs, will benefit throughout the production chain. This figure is a reflection of the government's commitment to job creation and improving the quality of life of Peruvians.

“This government is about results. With this fishing season, we not only strengthen the industry, but we also impact the Peruvian families that depend on this activity. Each ton of anchovy represents an opportunity for thousands of Peruvians to prosper and get ahead,” said President Boluarte.

The production derived from this season will allow reaching more than 689,000 metric tons of fishmeal and fish oil, with the international market as the main destination. This highly decentralized activity will boost coastal economies, generating income, employment and foreign exchange in the different regions of the Peruvian coast. The participation of around 700 authorized fishing vessels is expected, which will contribute to a constant flow of income at the local level.

The government reaffirms its commitment to work together with the private sector and coastal communities to promote fishing that contributes to the sustainable development of the country.
