In 2024, the Agricultural Service - Technical Center of Lang Giang District, in collaboration with the Bac Giang Agricultural Extension Center, launched a model titled “Application of Biofloc Technology in Intensive Tilapia Farming Linked to Production.”

This initiative, covering 1 hectare across two households in Thai Dao and Dai Lam communes in Lang Giang District, aims to promote sustainable, high-yield fish farming practices.

Delivering fish fry to households participating in the model

Households participating in this project receive 70% financial support for seed costs and 27% for materials such as feed, biological products, and molasses, with the remaining 30% of seed costs and 73% of material costs covered by the households themselves. In addition to technical training, the program ensures that harvested fish are sold through pre-established contracts, securing a market for the product.

Seedlings must meet technical standards when put into the pond.

Biofloc technology, central to this model, enables organic waste and microbial populations to coexist in the pond, facilitated by water mixing and aeration that maintain floc particles in suspension. These particles improve water quality and serve as supplementary feed, enhancing the health and growth rates of tilapia while reducing feed consumption. Compared to traditional intensive tilapia farming, the Biofloc method has demonstrated approximately 15% higher economic efficiency. Seen as a breakthrough in aquaculture, Biofloc technology supports faster growth, improved disease resistance, and overall greater sustainability for tilapia farming.

Households participating in the model of releasing fish fry

Inspection results after four months of implementation showed strong fish growth and survival rates exceeding 80%. At the six-month mark, it is anticipated that average fish weight will reach 0.8 kg, with a projected yield of over 28 tons per hectare and a feed conversion ratio below 1.3. Biofloc technology is also advantageous for the environment, as it reduces the need for water changes and minimizes the risk of microbial contamination, contributing to a safer and more biosecure farming environment.

This model provides farmers with access to innovative farming methods, yielding numerous benefits such as lower feed costs, reduced disease incidence, minimized environmental impact, higher fish survival rates, and shorter production cycles. Additionally, it supports the production of high-quality, food-safe aquatic products with traceable origins, thereby promoting sustainable aquaculture practices within the district.
