Workers of the fishing industry agreed yesterday to start an indefinite strike in the entire fleet and plants of the fishing industry in the region, as a protest against the approval of law regulating the capture of the giant squid and the "short" fisheries law.
Yesterday a series of demonstrations took place in the area, both by those who are in favor of the aforementioned law, and those who express their absolute rejection of the initiative.
The measure was decided after knowing the latest agreements of senators and deputies "that, against all technical, scientific and social arguments, approved the Giant Squid Law and Cut Law", it is explained from the sector.
The strike was announced yesterday by the presidents of the organizations of Captains, Motorists, Crewmen, Plant Workers and associates of PESCAPYME AG for service to the fishing industry, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Eric Riffo, Hugo Roa, Juana Silva and Yuri Salinas, respectively , at the end of a meeting of the directives and at the beginning of an assembly with the bases.
"As of this moment an indefinite strike is declared. The demands are that the Executive sends to the Constitutional Court the Giant Squid Law, withdraw the Short Law Project and that the presidents of the Senate Fisheries Commissions, Rabrindanath Quinteros , and of the Chamber of Deputies, Gabriel Ascencio, resign because they do not give any guarantee to the 40,000 fishing workers from Chile, of them 12,000 from the Biobío Region," the leaders said.

The boats that were in activity were warned that they had to return immediately to port and to join the strike. In addition, the leaders warned that they would initiate demonstrations because "patience ran out."
