Contrary to initial expectations, the first vessels operating south of the 49° parallel in search of squid have reported a successful start.
According to reliable sources, daily catches in these early days have ranged between 50 and 70 tons, creating an optimistic outlook for both the fishing sector and local communities. This initial performance strengthens expectations for a favorable season, despite earlier concerns about market conditions and the state of squid populations.

Optimism grew further yesterday when a small group of jiggers moved northward to a zone near Puerto Deseado. A notable concentration of squid was detected in this area, raising the expectations of fishermen and experts. However, concrete results from these operations will be known in the coming hours after the reports from the vessels already fishing in the area are analyzed.

Sources consulted by the Argentine news outlet Mar&Pesca expressed satisfaction with the results achieved so far. They also predicted that more vessels would join the fishing activity in the region in the coming days. "We estimate that by January 12, the entire fleet will be active, as that day marks the opening of fishing south of the 44° parallel for all vessels," they noted, emphasizing the significance of this milestone for the expansion of the season..
The squid season is one of the most anticipated by workers in the sector, as it generates significant economic activity. From dock workers, merchants, and suppliers to fishermen, plant operators, and truck drivers, many benefit from the industry. This period thus becomes one of the most active and essential stages for the regional economy.

The promising start, along with the anticipated arrival of more vessels and the potential for higher catches, bodes well for the fishing industry in southern Argentina. In addition to strengthening the economy of the primary sector, this performance will positively impact local communities, reaffirming the importance of squid as a key resource for regional development.
