Illegal fishing for shark fins, which are considered a delicacy and served as soup in some restaurants despite the ban, is reported to have increased in the state. Thus, in April 2022, in one of the restaurants in the city of San Antonio, more than 400 shark fins were found, as well as entire carcasses of sharks.
Shark fishing is banned in many US states due to animal cruelty. Every year, between 70 and 100 million sharks are caught in the world for the sake of shark fins. According to rangers, sharks are usually caught, their fins removed, and the animals themselves thrown back into the ocean, where they die a painful death.
