National Fish Farming Exports Surge by 174% in the Third Quarter

Brazilian fish farming has experienced remarkable growth in the third quarter of 2024, with exports increasing by 174% in financial value and 158% in the quantity of products compared to the same period last year. Between July and September, the sector exported US$18.5 million worth of fish, totaling 4,000 tons. These figures highlight the sector's expansion in Brazil and are detailed in the latest edition of the Foreign Trade in Fish Farming newsletter.

This is the 19th edition of the bulletin, which provides quarterly analyses of Brazilian fish farming export and import data. Prepared by Embrapa Pesca e Aquicultura (Palmas-TO) in partnership with the Brazilian Fish Farming Association (PeixeBR), the publication is available free of charge. Tilapia Dominates Production and Exports

Tilapia remains Brazil's most produced and exported fish. From July to September, exports of tilapia exceeded US$18 million, reflecting a 173% increase compared to the same quarter last year. In contrast, the second most exported species, curimatá, accounted for only US$146,000, while tambaqui, the most produced native Brazilian species, ranked third with US$108,000 in exports during the analyzed period.

United States Leads Export Destinations

The analysis reveals that the United States is the primary destination for Brazilian fish farming exports. In the third quarter of 2024, 92% of the sector’s exports, valued at US$17 million, were sent to the U.S. Canada, Japan, and China each accounted for 2% of exports. Notably, tilapia was the only species exported to Canada and Japan during this period.

Fresh or Chilled Fillet: The Top Export Product

The most exported tilapia product was fresh or chilled fillet, contributing US$12 million to Brazilian fish farming exports between July and September, a staggering 174% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Exports of this product have consistently grown over the past two years, particularly following its entry into the U.S. market.

In terms of value per kilogram, fresh or chilled tilapia fillet is the most lucrative product, reaching US$7.89 in the third quarter of 2024, up from US$6.99 during the same period last year. This product not only represents the highest added value but is also the most exported by Brazil in terms of financial volume, which helps explain the recent surge in fish farming exports.

Regional Contributions to Exports

In the third quarter of 2024, the states of Paraná and São Paulo together accounted for 95% of the sector's exports. Paraná contributed US$10.7 million, representing 59% of the total exports, while São Paulo accounted for US$6.5 million, or 36%. In both states, the primary exported product was fresh or chilled tilapia fillet.
