Russia increases capture, production and export of fishing products

Exports of Russian fish products in January-August 2023 (excluding trade outside the customs area) amounted to about 1.4 million tons, which is 4% more than the 2022 level. In value terms, $3.6 billion was exported, which is 4% less than the 2022 level.

The main share in the export of fish products is occupied by: frozen fish - 76%, fish fillets and other fish meat (including minced meat) - 10%, flour and granules of non-food aquatic biological resources - 7%, crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic invertebrates - 5%.
Main export items of fishery products in January-August 2023:

- frozen fish – more than 1 million tons;
- fish fillet and other fish meat (including minced meat) - 147 thousand tons;
- non-food flour and granules from aquatic biological resources - 100 thousand tons;
- crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic invertebrates – 72 thousand tons.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, exports of all agricultural products from the Russian Federation in 2024 could reach $45 billion.
Imports of fish products in January-August 2023 amounted to about 390 thousand tons, which is 26% more than the level of 2022 ($1.7 billion).
The main share in the import of fish products is occupied by: frozen fish - 44%, crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic invertebrates - 21%, prepared or canned fish, caviar - 13%, prepared or canned crustaceans and mollusks -6%, fish fillet and other meat ( including minced meat) – 6%, fresh fish – 4%, dried and salted fish – 3%.
Main import items of fishery products in January-August 2023:
- frozen fish - 171 thousand tons;
- crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic invertebrates, with or without shells - 83 thousand tons;
- prepared or canned fish, caviar - 50 thousand tons;
- prepared or canned crustaceans and mollusks – 23 thousand tons;
- fish fillet and other fish meat (including minced meat).
Russian fishermen continue to successfully fish - by September 18, more than 4 million tons were produced, which is 11.5% more than last year.

Catch and production fully cover the needs of the domestic market and allow increasing exports; products are imported to provide a wide range (that is, products that are not mined or produced by domestic enterprises in the industry or are not yet produced in sufficient quantities due to increased demand).
