Primex International: Excellence Rooted in Its Origins

While Primex International operates from a Parisian office steeped in charm, its activities extend far beyond France’s borders.

True to its credo, 'We select the best origins in the world,' the company operates on a global scale, as highlighted by Marine Van Der Marlière, its Sales Director, in an interview with Fanny Rousselin-Roudvoal for Produits de la Mer (PDM)

Founded in 1983, this family-owned SME originally specialized in meat. “It’s above all a story of people,” explains Frédéric Lebaron, the current manager, who continues to foster strong partnerships with both customers and suppliers.

Over the years, Primex International expanded its focus to seafood products, sourcing from top-tier locations worldwide. Key regions include Norway (cod, salmon, saithe, and haddock), France (scallops, mackerel, and whiting), Asia (cephalopods, shrimp, and red mullet), and South America (scallops and shrimp). Its diverse clientele spans freezer centers, industrial processors, supermarkets, and wholesalers catering to the restaurant industry. Despite its extensive reach, the group’s name remains discreet. “We are primarily active in private label (MDD). To live happily, we live hidden,” remarks Frédéric Lebaron with a smile.

In 2017, Primex International ventured into production, establishing a state-of-the-art factory and launching Primex Norway. Located in Myre, in the heart of the Arctic Circle’s Lofoten Islands, the facility boasts 70 employees and a 12,000-ton production capacity. “Our factory is the only French fish production company located above the Arctic Circle,” notes Marine Van Der Marlière, emphasizing the unique nature of the operation.

Situated directly at the port, the facility processes “exceptional” MSC- and ASC-certified fish, including cod, skrei cod, Arctic salmon, and saithe. “Proximity to raw materials was key, especially since Norway – unlike Iceland – bases quotas on numerous small coastal boats,” explains Lebaron.

This industrial foothold also spurred the creation of a national brand, Kriståll. “Kriståll, the responsible fisherman, is dedicated to offering raw, premium seafood with a commitment to responsible sourcing, authenticity, and superior taste,” emphasizes Van Der Marlière.

Although the company values discretion, its achievements suggest it is well on its way to gaining the recognition it deserves.
