The bill now proceeds to its second constitutional process and must be voted soon in the Chamber of Deputies so director of the confederation and president of the Federation of Artisanal Fishermen of Valparaiso Region Eduardo Quiroz calls on all sector organizations "to request their parliamentarians to support this initiative and thus achieve results".
"In addition to improving the economic aspect of the artisanal sector, this initiative comes to present us with a challenge, which is how to make giant squid catch more efficient and for that reason, it is necessary to open the registers in regions where the resource exists today but there are no permits," Quiroz said.
The leader recalled that it is a modification presented during the previous government and that it was dismissed, but this year they are retaking it together with the deputies for the region of Valparaiso, Jorge Brito (RD) and Camila Rojas (IGUAL).
"We must do a political job inside parliament, which is where this discussion is today," said the leader.
"We also want this initiative to be a precedent for the most important fisheries, as is the case of the common hake, which is still a trawl victim even though it is in an overexploited status. In addition, it is essential to dissipate the false beliefs that are reinstated regarding what measures such as these are synonymous with unemployment, as the industrial sector is prepared to convert their fishing gear. Today more than ever, unity is a triumph", he concluded.
For his part, CONAPACH president Oscar Espinoza referred to the motion noting that "these days are decisive to bring about the long-awaited changes for artisanal fisheries to ensure the conservation of their resources."
The leader stressed that "the fishing gear that allows a selection of resources, are the basis of optimal management of the states of fisheries." Therefore, he said that they urge parliamentarians to support the guidelines proposed by the artisanal fishermen of the country, in this case, the giant squid sector.
"We hope it is the beginning of the end of non-selective fishing gear, which are the most harmful to the marine resources of the country," said the national leader.
