Senator Raúl de Jesús Elenes reported that it is expected that in September, when fishing on the high seas begins, the US embargo on Mexican wild shrimp will be suspended.
Sinaloa.- The embargo on the production of wild shrimp will be suspended and it is expected that in September, when the fishing season on the high seas begins, the certification by the United States will be granted again, due to the negotiations carried out by the Secretary of Foreign Relations and the Mexican ambassador to the US, Esteban Moctezuma, reported Senator Raúl de Jesús Elenes Angulo. Due to this situation, the Senate of the Republic considered that its intervention was not necessary, because the federal government has already taken action on the matter to reverse it and inspections are expected again when the 1,300 shrimp vessels come into operation.
He explained that most of the shrimp production has already been exported, according to the reports received, and possibly there is little in the warehouse, which can be released at the beginning of the crustacean fishing season. clarifications regarding the production of coastal fishing and in a note sent by the United States, it was requested that a mechanism should be sought to differentiate between the high seas product that the shrimp fleet catches and those of the coastal one, because they are of sizes similar, situation that is being reviewed.
With this, he specified that it does not seek to harm coastal fisheries, which after the negotiations, it was already clear that it can be exported without problems, just like aquaculture shrimp.
Responsibility
There are many producers who chose to make a demarcation and point out to the fishing authority the withdrawal of the certification of wild shrimp, and in this sense, clarified that the inspections are environmental matter and are done by the staff of Profepa and Semarnap, and not Conapesca, that it lacks powers to supervise and sanction for the use of turtle excluder devices.
The violators of these provisions are the producers and owners of the vessels, who did not supervise their crew, because it is impossible to have an observer in the 1,300 vessels, he insisted, acknowledging that the problem lies in the myth that in these exclusion devices Part of the shrimp production leaves when it is opened, but with the sanctions imposed by the United States, the losses are greater and they cannot export the Mexican production.
One of the issues raised by the producers was that they will be notified when there are going to be supervisions of these excluders, which, he considered it is unethical to do this and they should always be working and not only when there is an inspection notice.
