The development of trade and economic cooperation between Russia and China in the field of fisheries and aquaculture was discussed at the SPIEF-2024 session on June 8.

“China is a truly strategic partner for Russia in the fishing industry,” noted Vasily Sokolov, deputy head of Rosrybolovstvo.

Supplies to China account for almost 50% of the total volume of Russian fish and seafood exports - 1.27 million tons (the total volume of fish exports from the Russian Federation in 2023 reached 2.5 million tons).

Cooperation between Russia and China is developing in many areas, except for fish trade.

Common efforts are also being made at the level of international organizations, including the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the WTO.

Great prospects for cooperation between countries in the field of commercial aquaculture. In Russia, this fisheries sector is a driver of growth, production volumes are small compared to China and wild fish catches, but at the same time, positive dynamics have been observed for 10 years already (volume growth has doubled).

At the same time, Russia is interested in the experience of China as a world leader in the field of freshwater and marine aquaculture, including the production of fish feed and breeding work.

The deputy head of Rosrybolovstvo noted domestic aquaculture as a promising fisheries sector for investment and the creation of joint projects.

In addition, the countries jointly regulate stocks in the transboundary waters of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, and cooperate in the field of training personnel for fisheries. The most important area of cooperation is combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing). Russia and China consistently advocate strengthening cooperation in this area and developing an international legal framework, including for resolving issues related to legal trade.
