Hokkaido Trade Overview and Agricultural and Marine Product Import and Export Trends for January 2025

Both imports and exports are booming, with exports of scallops to the United States showing remarkable growth.

According to the Hokkaido Foreign Trade Overview (Flash) recently compiled by the Hakodate Customs, exports of fishery products (fish and shellfish products) have increased for six consecutive months, expanding 2.8 times from the same period last year to approximately $32.7 million USD (4.9 billion yen). The increase was over $20.7 million USD (3.1 billion yen), with the main increase being scallops and other "crustaceans and mollusks" which increased by over $27.4 million USD (4.1 billion yen), with exports to the United States (approximately $14 million USD (2.1 billion yen)) growing.

Exports of marine products totaled 2,937 tons (153.6% compared to the same month last year) and approximately $32.3 million USD (4,855 million yen) (2.8 times the previous year). "Shellfish and mollusks" were 1,239 tons (154.3% compared to the previous year) and approximately $27.6 million USD (4,133 million yen) (4.9 times the previous year), with the United States seeing significant growth of approximately $13.7 million USD (2,055 million yen) (6.6 times the previous year), ASEAN countries seeing approximately $7.2 million USD (1,075 million yen) (6.2 times the previous year), and Western Europe seeing approximately $2.4 million USD (363 million yen) (all increases). Cod and salmon also saw increases.

Imports of marine products were 5,644 tons (122.4% increase) and approximately $43.3 million USD (6,469 million yen) (128% increase). Major items that increased were salmon and trout at 1,166 tons (2.4 times) and approximately $6.8 million USD (1,011 million yen) (2.1 times), squid at 363 tons (128% increase) and approximately $2.9 million USD (438 million yen) (2.4 times), and sea urchins at 969 tons (112.9% increase) and approximately $10.1 million USD (1,508 million yen) (122.3% increase).

The export value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products and food, extracted by the International Economics Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Export and International Bureau from the trade statistics of the Ministry of Finance, was approximately $639.3 million USD (95.4 billion yen), up 10.4% from the same month last year, while the import value was approximately $7.6 billion USD (1.1366 trillion yen), up 16.2% from the same month last year. Of these, exports of fishery products were approximately $159.4 million USD (23.8 billion yen), up 16.6% from the same month last year, and imports were approximately $1.3 billion USD (189.8 billion yen), up 17.3% from the same month last year.

The main export items were scallops (fresh, chilled and frozen) at approximately $39 million USD (5.818 billion yen), an increase of 115.2%. Yellowtail increased by 21.7% to approximately $23.9 million USD (3.567 billion yen), while prepared seafood products (sea cucumbers, scallops, etc.) decreased by 42.3% to approximately $23.4 million USD (3.488 billion yen). Scallops increased by approximately $20.7 million USD (3.1 billion yen), with growth from the United States, Thailand and Vietnam. Prepared scallop products decreased by approximately $6.7 million USD (1 billion yen), with declines from Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.
