NTT Green & Food (NTTG&F), a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, announced the commencement of operations at its new land-based vannamei shrimp farming facility in Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The plant, set to start at the end of November, will mark Japan’s largest land-based shrimp farming operation in terms of production volume.
Yoshikazu Kusumi, President of NTTG&F, shared the news during the “Shrimp Special” event at the Seafood Show, highlighting the recent acquisition of Umisaki Yukinoya, located just 2.4 kilometers from the new plant. He noted that this close proximity will double production capacity, allowing for operational synergies and significant economic impact in the region.
The acquisition of Umisaki Yukinoya, which operates a low environmental impact land-based aquaculture facility with a fully enclosed circulation system, aligns with NTTG&F’s commitment to sustainability and technological innovation. In line with the Kansai Electric Power Group’s Medium-Term Management Plan (2021-2025), this move supports structural reforms and future growth investments. By integrating the operations of both plants, NTTG&F aims to optimize management resources and drive innovation, using DX (digital transformation) technology from both NTTG&F and the NTT group to make land-based aquaculture smarter and more sustainable.
NTT Green & Food Model: Eco-Friendly, Circular Land-Based Aquaculture: The land-based aquaculture system that NTT Green & Food aims for is comprised of a plant producing fish and shellfish, a plant producing their feed, microalgae, and a water purification plant that purifies the excrement and other waste of fish and shellfish. First, we will work to develop and use systems in-house, and in the future, we aim to provide these systems to external parties.
With the increasing demand for seafood and growing environmental concerns, this project represents a key step in addressing these challenges while contributing to the sustainable growth of Japan’s aquaculture industry. The initiative reinforces NTTG&F’s vision of harnessing technology to shape the future of land and food, creating a smarter, more efficient aquaculture system.
