The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has authorized the start of the first fishing season of 2025 for the anchovy (Engraulis ringens) resource in the North-Central zone of the country, establishing a total quota of 3 million tons. This figure marks the best first season in the last seven years and the second highest in the last decade. The decision is based on the rigorous technical and biological report issued by the Marine Institute of Peru (IMARPE).
“Our anchovy population is in optimal health, currently with a biomass close to 11 million tons, mainly due to the neutral environmental conditions of our sea. This season reaffirms Peru's sustainable fisheries management and the capacity to develop responsible industrial fishing, based on technical criteria and with a vision for the future,” stated the Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos.
The extractive activity will officially begin at 00:00 hours on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, following the execution of Operation EUREKA LXXVI by the Marine Institute of Peru (IMARPE) between April 19 and 21.
Solid Economic Impact and Job Creation:
The Peruvian fishing sector experienced a notable growth of 24.9% in 2024, driven by two successful seasons that generated more than 4.6 million tons of anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil production (FMFO). This new season is expected to further consolidate this growth.
“This quota not only energizes one of our most important industries but also projects the generation of approximately 90 thousand jobs in the coastal regions. Peru needs positive news like this,” concluded Vice Minister Barrientos.
