In a letter addressed to the President of the Council of Ministers, the National Society of Artisanal Fishing (SONAPESCAL) has requested the dismissal of the Minister of Production, accusing him of allowing the entry of foreign fishing vessels without applying the provisions of Supreme Decree No. 014-2024-PRODUCE, which regulates the control and monitoring of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
The organization denounces that, between September 26 and 30, 2024, 21 Chinese-flagged fishing vessels entered the port of Callao, of which 10 set sail without having verified whether they complied with the installation of the satellite tracking system (SISESAT), a requirement stipulated in the decree. SONAPESCAL argues that this lack of control puts fishing resources at risk, especially giant squid, whose extraction has decreased by 70% in the first half of 2024.
Likewise, the approval of the decree without adequate public consultation and with provisions that were not evaluated by the Multisectoral Commission for Regulatory Quality is criticized. SONAPESCAL warns that the lack of transparency and control in the current management of the Ministry of Production seriously affects the artisanal fishing sector and demands immediate actions to safeguard Peruvian marine resources.
