The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) reported the existence of 31 Atlantic salmon and trout farming centres with high spread of caligus (sea lice).
Under the Specific Caligidosis Monitoring and Control Sanitary Programme (PSVEC Caligidosis) a centre is considered to have a high spread of caligus when it presents a weekly average load that is higher than nine parasites per specimen.
Only seven centres were farming rainbow trout and the remaining ones (24 centres) were farming Atlantic salmon.
Out of the centres having high caligus spread (CAD) reported, one is undergoing a harvesting phase -- El Manzano, belonging to Salmones Humboldt --, while the others (30) are in the fattening state.
The companies that have a higher amount of CAD include:
Last April, SERNAPESCA director, José Luis Ansoleaga, predicted that this year the harvested salmon volumes will remain at 800,000 tonnes, as those registered in 2012 and 2013.
From the industry there are expressions of optimism for the maintenance of high prices and signs of progress towards reducing production costs.
