The Galician company of frozen food, Marfrio, was granted for the third consecutive year the National award The Taste of the Year for three of its flagship products and has reaffirmed its strategy of "diversification of markets and products."
Speaking to a group of journalists during the award ceremony, held at Club Financiero de Vigo, the company’s CEO, Santiago Montejo, advocated the widening of the industrial net with two new production lines for the firm’s factories in Portugal and Marin.
By a large majority, a jury of 60 people decided, after a blind tasting of the products presented in the contest, that the winner products were Marfrio’s breaded squid strips (rabas), its batter fried squids and the swordfish appetizers.
Marfrio President, Pedro Otaegui, its CEO, Santiago Montejo, and the Commercial Manager, Ramon Abeijon, attended the awards ceremony.
Montejo said that the current phase of the company’s expansion, despite being "contrary to the usual trend" in a situation of economic crisis, has allowed the firm to open a new line of ready meals in its Pralisa factory in Vilanova de Cerveira (Portugal) and another of preformed frozen meals in Marin.
The firm keeps committed to operations in Peru, where a few months ago it acquired 60 per cent of Vieira Peru for EUR 550,000. In addition, it plans to expand these facilities this year, to allow for more cooling capacity.
"We are betting on industrial diversification and quality positioning. Now is the time to preserve employment and it will take us some years to position us firmly in the markets," said the executive at the end of his presentation, according to Atlantico newspaper.
Marfrio was founded in 1985 through the merger of shipowners Copemar and Echalar. It has a fleet of five fishing boats, including trawlers, longliners and shellfishing vessels. Its staff has 160 permanent workers in Marin (200 including discontinuous ones).
In Portugal, the company has about 200 employees and in Peru, 40 indefinite contract workers and 50 variable ones.
In 2013, the company’s turnover was of around EUR 85 million, similar to that of the previous year.
