Alaska Salmon Harvest Surpasses 3.2 Million Fish at the Start of the 2026 Season

Strong momentum from sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on the Alaska Peninsula leads initial landings, accounting for 62% of the state's total cumulative volume.

JUNEAU, ALASKA – The commercial salmon fishing season in Alaska has begun to record its first significant volumes of the 2026 season. According to Report No. 2 from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G), corresponding to statistical week 25 (ending June 20, 2026), cumulative catches for all species in the state exceeded 3.24 million fish. This figure represents approximately 3% of the total estimated annual projection for this season, which is set at 120.68 million pieces.

The initial pace of the harvest is primarily driven by sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), a species that currently contributes 62% of the statewide cumulative volume with 1.98 million fish caught against an annual projection of 44.90 million (a 4% progress). Most of this early activity has been concentrated on the Alaska Peninsula, specifically in the Unimak district of the region known as Area M. In this area, nearly 1.39 million sockeye salmon have been landed, representing a 250% increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 399,000 fish were recorded in that region.

In other key areas of the state, the Copper River gillnet fishery accounts for the second-highest volume of sockeye salmon, with more than 227,000 fish reported to date. The remainder of the sockeye salmon from the Prince William Sound region came from the Eshamy district. Meanwhile, in Bristol Bay, all sockeye salmon catches through week 25 were located in the Egegik and Ugashik districts. The start of operations in the Nushagak district experienced delays due to the implementation of regulations aimed at mitigating the incidental catch of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).

Regarding other seafood species, the report details the performance of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and keta or chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). On the Alaska Peninsula, landings of both species show a notable surge compared to the previous year. In fact, the Unimak district absorbed the entirety of the 860,000 pink salmon caught statewide so far, achieving a 2% progress against the annual projection of 55.98 million. In contrast, the statewide catch of keta salmon totaled 383,000 units (a 2% of the annual target of 17.18 million), representing an 80% contraction compared to the 1.96 million pieces obtained by the same date in 2025.

Finally, the species with lower volumes at this stage of the year, coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), reached catches of 1,000 and 10,000 fish respectively across the entire state. The progress of the commercial season will continue to be evaluated during the coming weeks of July and August, periods that historically register the highest peak of salmon returns to Alaska watersheds.
