Research-backed redesign aims to improve consumer trust, align with EU regulations, and boost global adoption by 2027

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has unveiled a newly redesigned on-pack label aimed at improving how consumers understand sustainability in seafood, marking a significant step forward after more than 15 years of brand development.

The updated label is the result of an extensive, research-driven process that included trademark registration across the European Union and more than 20 additional countries, as well as quantitative consumer testing in five major global markets. By selecting regions with varying levels of sustainability awareness, ASC ensured the label would resonate across diverse audiences worldwide.

Stronger Impact Backed by Data

Testing results revealed that the new label not only preserves the strength of the original but outperforms it in several key areas:

  • Clarity Over Clutter: A cleaner, streamlined design enables faster recognition and improves understanding of ASC’s mission.

  • Higher Recall Rates: Consumers demonstrated stronger memory retention compared to the previous label.

  • Improved Purchase Intent: The redesign maintained—and in some cases increased—consumer willingness to buy ASC-certified products.

Aligned with New EU Sustainability Rules

The rollout comes ahead of major regulatory changes in the European Union, specifically the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, set to take effect in September 2026. The legislation introduces stricter requirements on environmental claims to combat misleading “green” marketing practices.

By launching early, ASC is helping partners avoid multiple packaging updates within a short timeframe. Distribution of products featuring the new label will begin immediately across EU markets.

The organization expects that by the end of 2027, nearly all ASC-certified products worldwide will carry the updated label, with only limited legacy stock remaining.

Phased Global Transition

The transition will prioritize companies placing consumer-facing products within the EU market, followed by partners operating in other regions. ASC confirmed that license holders have been kept informed throughout the process and are receiving ongoing support to ensure a smooth shift.

Greater Flexibility for Industry Partners

Alongside the visual redesign, ASC is introducing several practical improvements to meet industry needs:

  • Scalability: New options for smaller packaging formats

  • Simplified Design: Expanded use of a more universal, cleaner label

  • Flexible Color Palettes: Greater adaptability to different brand styles

Leadership Perspective

Willem de Bruijn, Chief Commercial Officer at ASC, emphasized the broader significance of the update:

“This new label represents far more than a visual refresh—it is a strategic evolution in how we communicate the value of the ASC programme, making it even easier for consumers to recognise and understand what the ASC label stands for.”

“Grounded in extensive consumer research, our updated label strengthens key brand associations and purchase intent. At the same time, it gives our partners greater flexibility on pack and supports alignment with evolving regulatory requirements. By introducing it alongside the transition to the ASC Farm Standard, we are equipping our partners with a stronger, more effective way to demonstrate their commitment to transparency and credible sustainability.”
