The decision, announced by the vice minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, is based on the positive results of a scientific campaign to ensure the sustainability of the resource.
ILO – In a meeting with artisanal fishermen from Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has announced the restart of fishing operations for the "giant squid or pota" (Dosidicus gigas) starting next August 25. The measure comes after the successful conclusion of the technical closure, which began on June 30, 2025, and is supported by the results of Operation Giant Squid III.

The vice minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos, was in charge of making the announcement at the Ilo Fisheries Training Center. At the meeting, which was also attended by the president of the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE), progress on the scientific monitoring campaign was presented. IMARPE has been evaluating the availability and other biological indicators of the resource to ensure its sustainable use.

The last vessels that are still operating in the southern part of the country are expected to arrive in the coming days. Once the information has been processed, the final additional quota that artisanal fishermen can extract in this new stage will be determined, ensuring responsible management of the biomass.
"Starting August 25, we will return to the sea, but we will do so responsibly. Each decision seeks to prevent scenarios that compromise the availability of the resource in 2026. Our commitment is to the fishermen, but also to the sustainability of the squid for future generations," emphasized vice minister Barrientos.

Likewise, Barrientos explained that, until Peru's scientific position on a separate stock of the species prevails, it is inappropriate to address the request to regionalize a fishery or establish a differentiated quota for the southern zone. The management decisions, he stressed, are based on technical management criteria and a vision of comprehensive fisheries management.
The Minister of Production, Sergio González, supported the decision, highlighting that "the measures we are taking are based on scientific evidence and a sustainable management approach." The Ministry of Production thus concludes a series of technical meetings with fishing guilds at a national level, reinforcing coordination with the sector to balance productivity and conservation.
