Artisanal vessels join crucial scientific research for the sustainability of the resource
The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has greenlit the "Giant Squid Operation III," a key scientific initiative for the recovery of the pota (jumbo flying squid) resource following the effects of the 2023-2024 El Niño phenomenon. The operation, which will run from August 1 to 10, includes the participation of artisanal fishing vessels, marking a milestone in the sector's commitment to sustainability and scientific research.

The Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos, highlighted that this operation "marks a before and after for artisanal pota fishing." The initiative will not only provide crucial information for responsible fisheries management but also demonstrates the willingness of a sector that seeks to formalize and work hand-in-hand with the government.
The "Giant Squid Operation III" will be led by the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE), which will be responsible for collecting data on the abundance, population structure, and reproductive aspects of the jumbo flying squid, as well as analyzing oceanographic conditions. The results of this research will be fundamental for designing management policies that ensure the long-term sustainability of the resource.
Commitment and Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
PRODUCE highlighted the active participation of organizations such as the Cooperative "Jehová es Mi Pastor Nada Me Faltará" from La Tortuga (Paita), Régimen 1392, and SONAPESCAL. Their vessel owners have demonstrated their commitment to science and collaboration with IMARPE, sending a clear message: "sustainability and science are not optional, they are the foundation to ensure that pota remains a source of employment and well-being for thousands of families," Barrientos stated.

The operation will be closely monitored and controlled by PRODUCE and IMARPE to ensure strict compliance with research and safety protocols. The data obtained will not only help to restore the resource's productivity but also build confidence in fisheries management based on scientific evidence.
