Peru Boosts Squid Quota While Bolstering Sustainable Fishing Measures

PRODUCE elevates the Maximum Allowable Catch Limit for giant squid and implements rigorous management measures, prioritising the recovery and traceability of this vital resource for the national economy.

LIMA – Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has announced a series of key measures to enhance and regulate the giant squid (or pota) fishery, increasing its Maximum Allowable Catch Limit (LMCTP) for the period from January 1 to August 31, 2025. The initial quota is set at 304,209 tonnes, a 4.89% increase from the previous limit of 290,000 tonnes established on May 23.

This decision, outlined in Ministerial Resolution N.º 00193-2025-PRODUCE, follows scientific recommendations from the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE). IMARPE's latest technical report highlights a progressive recovery and positive trend in the giant squid population. PRODUCE aims to capitalise on this favourable trend while ensuring responsible resource utilisation.

"The real progress lies in regulating the fishery and providing more dignified and profitable conditions for our fishermen. It's not just about catching more; it's about doing it better, with clear rules, effective control, and responsibility towards the sea," stated Jesús Barrientos, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. He emphasised that these measures solidify a modern fishing industry, based on scientific evidence, traceability, and social and environmental sustainability.

The new package of measures introduces enhanced control mechanisms and improved operational practices onboard. Key highlights include:

• Exclusive use of the jigger line as the sole fishing gear.
• Establishment of catch limits per fishing trip based on artisanal vessels' hold capacity.
• Mandatory use of ice in a 2:1 ratio for immediate resource preservation.
• Compulsory inspection reports for each landing.
• Regulation of transport, which must be carried out exclusively in isothermal vehicles to guarantee product safety.

These regulations aim not only to preserve the marine ecosystem's balance but also to protect the economic activity of thousands of Peruvian families. Giant squid is a strategic hydrobiological resource, accounting for over 40% of national landings and generating employment both offshore and onshore through processing, transport, and commercialisation chains. With a preventive approach, PRODUCE is committed to management that combines productivity with long-term sustainability.
